A minute of educational content: look at what the work of the Ocean Cleanup project looks like, in rendering and in practice (2 photos + 1 video)
This is the only project to clean the oceans of plastic.
The idea of the project is to launch a horseshoe-shaped surface system into existing currents in the oceans. Its movement is slowed down by a sea anchor, at a depth of about 600 meters. Another part of the design is a durable screen under the floating pipe, designed to hold and accumulate debris floating in the ocean, primarily plastic.
Such a system does not require an external power source to move and collect debris, since it uses currents to drift in the ocean. The U-shaped system can move freely, for example, in the North Pacific Current, collecting plastic and other waste. From time to time, support vessels will be able to pick up debris accumulated in the trap and deliver it to the coast.
They just started operating in September and have already conducted three garbage collection swims.
