The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Hungarian biochemist Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman, whose research led to the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.
“The discoveries of Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman played a critical role in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020,” the Nobel Committee said in a congratulatory message.

It is noted that the most popular coronavirus vaccines (from Pfizer and Moderna) were based on the developments of Kariko and Weissman. The scientists will receive a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million).
The remaining 2023 Nobel Prize winners will be announced in the first half of October. Tomorrow, October 3, the laureates in physics will be announced in Stockholm, on October 4 - in chemistry, on October 5 the best writer will be named, on October 6 the next winner of the Peace Prize will be announced, and on October 9 the award will be presented to economists.
