Amphoras found on board were usually used to transport liquids - oils, wines.
The ship was found off the port of Civitavecchia, about 80 km northwest of Rome, on a sandy bottom at a depth of about 160 m.
Hundreds of amphoras were found on board the ship, most of which are almost perfectly preserved. Amphoras found on board were usually used to transport liquids - oils, wines. Such artifacts are quite common in the Mediterranean.
"This find is an important example of an ancient Roman ship that got into a storm and tried to reach the shore. It also gives an idea of the sea trade routes in those days," the police commented.
