Semakau - garbage miracle of Singapore (15 photos)

The Semakau landfill is an island landfill for recycling Singapore waste. It collects non-recyclable waste. By the way, this is the only remaining landfill in the island state.





Initially, Semakau Island was a fishing island. Everything changed in 1987 year, when the government began to buy property from the islanders. The last inhabitant of Semakau left the island in 1991.



The landfill covers an area of 3.5 km2, and the capacity is 63,000,000 m3. Specialists erected a protective embankment between the islands of Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng.





Preparatory work at the site was completed in 1999. On April 1, 1999, the landfill began to work.

It is planned to dispose of garbage until 2045.






The polygon is divided into sectors. When one sector falls asleep garbage, soil is laid on top and trees are planted. Mostly ash from Singapore's incinerators is disposed of here. And for protection of coral reefs and ocean waters the borders of the polygon are protected material that prevents waste from seeping into the ocean.






A significant part of the landfill is currently occupied by mangroves.

To improve biological diversity in 2007 next to a coral nursery was opened at the test site. Supervise the coral project nursery National University of Singapore, as well as the National Environmental Protection Agency.






In 2005, the site was opened for entertainment and recreational activities. Since then, the Semakau test site has become one of the tourist centers of the country.

The state of coastal waters, coral reefs and soil is continuously monitored.
