An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred in southern Turkey tonight. The epicenter of the tremors was located 27 kilometers from the large city of Gaziantep, whose population exceeds a million people. However, the settlement of Kahramanmaraş suffered the most; the town lies in ruins.

It is noteworthy that three days before the disaster, seismologist from the Netherlands Frank Hoogerbits predicted an earthquake in Turkey. He even named the exact magnitude of the tremors as 7.5. However, he could not predict the approximate date of the earthquake, limiting himself to the phrase “sooner or later.”

Some houses in Turkey and Syria continue to collapse even after the earthquake. The structures of many buildings were seriously damaged. Turkish authorities are advising citizens not to return to their apartments until experts assess the condition of the houses.

The earthquake destroyed the only runway of the airport in Hatay province in southeastern Turkey, CNNTurk TV channel reported. According to him, the runway is completely destroyed. The air harbor is not capable of receiving aircraft. However, the Federal Air Transport Agency stated that the earthquake in Turkey did not affect the flights of Russian airlines; all flights over Turkish airspace are operating as normal.

The UN World Heritage Site Aleppo Citadel was also damaged in the earthquake.

According to Syrian authorities, Aleppo, Hama and Latakia were hit hardest by the earthquake. According to the latest data, 237 people were killed in the republic and 639 were injured.

In Turkey, according to the latest data, 284 people were killed and another 2,383 were injured. Unfortunately, these numbers are not final - at least 1,700 houses collapsed, and a number of people are still under the rubble.
