What is this thing: the strangest finds. Issue 181

24 January 2024

And here is the new part of our irregular column “Explain to me what this thing is?” Once again, the guys from the Internet have found a lot of interesting and incomprehensible things, but for Internet experts there are no mysteries. They, as always, spoke in detail about each of them.

“Pipes filled with cement. They stand every 500 m along the tourist trail."

This is the foundation for small religious monuments. Since there is a small chapel at the top of the mountain, this trail also serves as a pilgrimage trail. Small figures stand along the path to show pilgrims where to go. They were there, but they were taken away for restoration.

"Enclosed copper gazebo on a residential lot, the house was built in 1929"

This structure is located above the dome of the temple. When old buildings are torn down, people buy these tops and give them new life.

“What a clown. Made of glass, there is a hole at the bottom. Hollow inside"

This is the top for the Christmas tree.

“What is this space next to the stairs for?”

This is a place for a flower pot.

"Old folding table in the professor's office"

Sewing machine table.

“Strange “bench” near the old elementary school parking lot.”

This is how playgrounds were equipped in the 70s and 80s. You need to lie on your back and slide, holding onto the bars.

“About 1.5 m long, with a metal tip on top.”

Dragon teeth. Fortification structure.

"Ceramic cup with various holes in the lid"

Potpourri holder.

“What are these pliers for?”

Wire crimping tool.

“The face is made of yellow-amber glass. Found it by the lake"

Just amber jewelry in art deco style.

“Wooden clamps, large – about 10 centimeters, small – about 5”

These are bar clamps. They are used to make large surfaces for tables and the like.

“We thought this could be a gem. Lighter than stone, but heavier than plastic. It is impossible to make a dent or crush it with your hands."

It looks like a caesalpinia fruit. It heats up from friction. Grows near beaches.

“A small blue circle with silver accents, lay in a green and yellow silky bag”

Multiwave emitter (oscillator) by Georgy Lakhovsky.

"Strange clay ladle"

Bowl for French onion soup.

“Strange triple socket. Too wide for a regular fork. I am living in America"

Power distribution system built into the table. It uses a special outlet for computer equipment to prevent someone accidentally plugging a vacuum cleaner into it.

“Found this behind a commercial freezer during a renovation. Plastic body, plastic balls, metal lid, about 40mm long"

This is a capsule for a glue trap for moths.

“It was standing on a hotel bed. You can’t unwind”

This is a reference to Ned Kelly's helmet, where the slit is where the eyes are. Ned Kelly is a famous criminal of the 19th century, known for his daring robberies, and even more so for his “uniform.”. He and other members of his gang wore homemade armor, part of which was a specific helmet.
