What a thing: the strangest finds. Issue 143

22 January 2023

We regularly come across things that are not immediately recognizable. All these incomprehensible things excite the imagination and torment with doubts, but here, as always, experts from the network come to the rescue, who easily and quickly solve all the riddles.

It's good that there are always experts on the Internet who will identify everything and offer solutions!

People create various objects to solve problems that some people don't even know about. But along with these created objects, new problems arise: it’s not immediately clear what is used and for what.

1. Strange wallet made of metal and velvet with a cage inside and ventilation holes

Old portable hand and foot warmer

2. A rubber piece attached inside a ski jacket

This is a phone holder.

Here's how it works:

3. Gold ring with thin plastic. Approx 1cm

This is the headphone diaphragm.

4. Sphere on four telescopic legs

It was found out that this is a phone holder.

Here's how it works

Looks exactly like the thing in the original photo, except for the magnet that holds the phone. Apparently, either it is not visible, or it is lost.

5. What is that oval metal thing in a plastic holder attached next to the sink?

The commentators determined that it was steel soap. It is needed to remove unpleasant odors from hands, for example, onions or garlic.

6. A bronze artifact found off the coast of northeastern Brazil. Kept in the family for many years

Many old ships used compass stands with dolphin-shaped legs. I can bet that initially there were three such pieces, as in the example below.

An example of such a compass

7. Wooden piece approximately 180 cm high

This is a laundry press. Home textiles can be stored there, and a press is needed so that the fabric is neatly folded and remains smooth.

8. What is that dot on the hotel mirror? They seem to be behind glass.

This is what happens when the silvering of the mirror deteriorates. It could have come from any chemicals or heat.

9. What is this container with a rooster on the stove used for?

Commentators found out that this is a humidifier. Such stoves dry out the air in the room. Water is poured into the container, it evaporates and moistens it.

10. Foam rubber piece from the local water authority

This is a water watcher that reminds children to save water.

It's insanely smart. The Hawthorne Effect — it's when people act differently when they know or feel they're being watched — choose healthier meals at lunch with their sports friends or become more productive at work when you're sitting next to your boss's office.

11. solid brass piece

Dialer for rotary phone. You insert the ball into the desired number on the disk, instead of making this tipm finger, and turn.

12. Does anyone know what this oval glass dish was used for?

Commenters reported that this is a vintage dinner plate, and the round recess is needed in order to put a mug or glass there.

13. What is a piece of wood with numbers on it

This is part of the magician's set, there should be about 6 of them, used in the trick with guessing the numbers.

This is what the whole set looks like:
