A dog is truly the best friend of a person who lived side by side with him, worked and helped in any kind of activity. Today, there are many breeds of these animals - some are the result of natural selection, others are the result of labor-intensive selection work of people, but all of them are faithful creatures, ready to show their devotion to man again and again.

The dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is an animal that has been tamed and domesticated by man since ancient times. The first archaeological finds of the skeletons of this animal near a human dwelling, discovered on the Eurasian continent, date back to the Mesolithic era.

Alabai

A powerful Central Asian shepherd dog, whose second name is the Turkmen wolfhound. According to historical data, this breed was formed naturally. Thanks to the harsh conditions in which this happened, the alabai acquired unprecedented endurance and excellent physical characteristics. Today they are successfully used as watchdogs.

Alaskan Malamute

A large native breed that was bred by Eskimo tribes to work in sleds. Alaskan Malamutes do not bark, but communicate by grunting and howling. But this is not their only feature - dogs need regular physical activity and are not suitable for everyone.

English Mastiff

Mastiffs, or in other words - large pugs, belong to the oldest Old English breed. In ancient times, they were used for hunting large animals, guarding slaves, military service and other, not always peaceful, work. But today the English Mastiff is an excellent dog - a companion and a family favorite.

Dogo Argentino

The pride of Argentina, as it is the only registered breed in this country. Various Molossian breeds took part in its creation, which endowed the Dogo Argentino with all the unique qualities of a fighter, guard and hunter.

Afghan Hound

The height of elegance and aristocracy that nature could bestow on a dog, the Afghan Hound has all this. Long a hunting breed, they are now more often seen reclining on the sofa or prancing elegantly in the most prestigious show arenas.

Bernese Mountain Dog

“Berns,” as they are affectionately called by fans of the breed, are excellent companions, suitable for large, close-knit families. And once upon a time, back in the 1st century BC, Bernese Mountain Dogs roamed with herds throughout the vast expanses of the Roman Empire.

Bloodhound

A powerful hunting dog that follows its prey by following its blood trail and is famous for its keen sense of smell. And although hunting is a priority for bloodhounds, such colorful dogs make excellent family dogs - with their own charisma and character.

Dogue de Bordeaux

A large dog with an athletic build, a descendant of powerful Molossians, who does an excellent job as a guard, watchman and bodyguard. The Dogue de Bordeaux requires serious training, but with the right approach, a person acquires a fearless and intelligent four-legged friend.

Beauceron

This is the name of a rather rare breed of French Shepherd. Having been a shepherd for a long time, the Beauceron gradually turned into a family dog. And the wariness and mistrust of representatives of this breed allows them to be used as guards and watchmen.

Briard

Have you ever seen a lapdog the size of a calf? This is what representatives of the Briard breed look like. It is believed that the breed appeared without human intervention, and these tireless and hardy dogs were engaged in herding livestock for a long time.

Bullmastiff

These descendants of severe mastiffs, with a serious appearance, have been photographed more than once as nannies for children. Yes, indeed, bullmastiffs harmoniously combine such qualities as good nature, devotion towards members of their family and wariness towards strangers.

Boerboel

The South African Boerboel is a breed of mastiff-like dog with an interesting history. They were once used to protect farms from attacks by wild animals, including lions. Of course, this purpose left its mark on the dog’s character, but time also smoothed out some of the rough edges.

Greyhound

Like all greyhounds, greyhounds are distinguished by their graceful physique and excellent hunting abilities. In addition, these dogs were included in the Guinness Book of Records, and not at all because of their beautiful appearance, but for their ability to develop unprecedented speed and overcome the highest obstacles.

Doberman

This breed of service dog, bred in Germany, has gained popularity throughout the world. First of all, lovers of the breed are attracted by their simultaneously elegant and rugged appearance. But at the same time, the character of Dobermans is not so simple.

Golden retriever

Goldens are dogs not only with golden color, but also with character. Originally a hunting breed, its representatives today have found their calling in various professions. Golden retrievers can be found at a customs post, in a rescue team, among sappers. And this dog performs excellently as a family dog.

Irish Wolfhound

This is a huge hunting dog, the breed of which dates back to ancient times. Since then, many legends and tales about their heroism and courage have developed around the Irish wolfhounds. But admirers of the breed are sure that these are not fairy tales at all, and the dogs really have similar qualities.

Irish Setter

These large athletes are excellent companions for people interested in hunting or active sports. Yes, the Irish Setter is not a couch dog, but an active, lively animal, but it is worth remembering that such a good-natured dog will not make a guard.

Spanish Mastiff

Giant representatives of this breed are full of contrasts, because their harsh, and even threatening, appearance does not correspond to their character. The Spanish Mastiff is described as an intelligent, loyal, caring dog, but devoid of malice and aggression.

Caucasian Shepherd Dog

An indigenous breed of Caucasian wolfhounds, the representatives of which have a formidable appearance and a stern character. These huge dogs clearly distinguish between “friends” and “strangers”, otherwise how could they become one of the best watchmen, guards, and defenders? The Caucasian Shepherd is a serious dog that requires an equally serious approach.

Cane Corso

The ancestors of these stately dogs were real gladiators, but modern Cane Corsos have not lost their fearlessness and courage. And although selection work has made them more docile, the dogs still remain vigilant watchmen and attentive guards.

Komondor

The amazing appearance of the Hungarian Shepherd allowed it to successfully camouflage itself as one of the sheep of the flock it protected. But the Komondor does not have the temperament of a sheep, and even several wolves were unable to fight such a formidable and cunning “shepherd.”

Leonberger

Among service breeds, the Leonberger is distinguished by its large size and phlegmatic temperament. It is the successful result of breeding work to develop a breed that looks like a lion, and has become a symbol of the German city of the same name.

German dog

The Great Dane is called the “Apollo” of the canine world; the dog is truly distinguished by its stately and harmonious physique. But, besides this, he has qualities that make him an excellent security guard, bodyguard, helps him successfully perform guard duty and be the best friend for all family members.

Newfoundland (diver)

Representatives of this breed have been used by fishermen for a long time - the dogs helped pull nets out of the water, handled small errands and were draft animals. This close cooperation with humans has made Newfoundlands excellent companion dogs.

Giant Schnauzers

The largest of the schnauzers are strong, stately, agile dogs with a balanced temperament. It is not known for certain whether they originated from herding or hunting breeds, but currently Giant Schnauzers are successfully used as service dogs.

Russian greyhound

Dogs of this hunting breed have silky hair - like a dog's - which is why they got their name. Once upon a time, every Russian landowner considered it obligatory to have a pack of these dogs as proof of his own well-being. Today, the Russian greyhound can be seen more often in competitions and exhibition rings.

Saint Bernard

Very popular dogs that are often used in cinema. Not so long ago, St. Bernards were successfully used in rescue activities in mountainous areas; today they are not only rescuers, but also actors, companions and even nannies.

Tibetan mastiff

Black Terrier

Black terriers, or in other words - Stalin's dogs, are the largest of the terrier family. This breed was bred in Russia in an attempt to produce service dogs capable of working in almost any conditions. As a result, the stamina, performance and endurance of black terriers can truly be envied.

American Bulldog

This breed is considered the closest and little-touched relative of the old English bulldogs. There were two types of breed - one was used to handle large animals, the other was used as a farm dog. As a result of selection work, the modern American Bulldog is a vigilant guard and a faithful family friend.

American Pit Bull Terrier

This breed was born as a weapon - merciless, used for bloody human entertainment. However, long-term selection work was able to reduce aggressiveness as much as possible while maintaining physical characteristics. American pit bull terriers are prohibited for breeding in many countries; in others, not all are allowed to breed. But the point is not the anger of dogs, but the inability of people to handle them and raise them correctly.

English bulldog

This breed with a rich history has come a long way - from baiting dogs to companion pets. English bulldogs are distinguished by their extraordinary appearance - squat, strong, with a large head and a flattened muzzle. But, despite their heaviness, representatives of the breed are considered true gentlemen.

English cocker spaniel

The good-looking dog was once used for hunting. Today, he is more often adopted as a family pet, because the unofficial name of the breed is “cheerful cocker.” The English Cocker Spaniel is a positive, active and good-natured dog that does not take offense.

Basset Hound

Surprisingly, these squat, phlegmatic dogs are hounds. Their sad appearance is by no means a sign of sadness, and some detachment does not mean that the dog is not interested in what is happening around him. Previously, aristocrats went hunting with basset hounds, but today the dog himself behaves like a representative of the upper class - a gentleman from paws to tip of tail.

Beagle

This medium-sized hound has a unique sense of smell, which was initially used for hare hunting, and later for more serious work - searching for explosives. Beagles are not for the lazy, they are not able to sit still for a long time, they love games, training and are happy to participate in any fun.

Boxer

Boxers are perhaps the most popular breed among mastiff dogs. The breeders sought to obtain ideal service dogs - disciplined, hardy, with adequate aggression and high intelligence, and, in fact, they succeeded.

Bull Terrier

A serious breed, whose representatives were involved in bullfights. However, it was bred for these purposes. Bull Terriers are very intelligent, trainable and get along well with everyone. However, in the wrong hands, a dog can become uncontrollable, and given its excellent physical qualities, this is very dangerous.

Dalmatian

Many states still claim to be the homeland of these amazing dogs - beautiful, harmoniously built and intelligent. But Dalmatians require proper upbringing, otherwise the pet may develop very unpleasant character traits. Therefore, it is better for people with experience to get such a dog.

Keeshond

Quite a rare Spitz breed, whose representatives love to “smile”. Like other Spitz dogs, Keeshonds have a touching appearance, a luxurious coat and a ring-shaped tail. Their curiosity and intelligence allow them to master the most difficult tricks without particularly straining.

Longhaired collie

These shepherd dogs, although they have lost their former popularity, still have many admirers. Long-haired collies are dogs with an elegant appearance, calm and reasonable, because they once had to make decisions on their own.

Kurzhaar

This is a unique breed of cops, whose representatives are ready to participate in any hunt, regardless of weather conditions. Their purpose influenced the excellent physical shape of the dogs, and interaction with humans made shorthaired pointers very flexible and understanding.

Laika

One of the rare working dogs that has not yet lost its purpose. Laikas are sled dogs and also hunters; they are very well developed physically and intelligent. But it is not recommended to get a husky for owners who do not intend to use the pet for its intended purpose - these dogs are freedom-loving and not very trainable

But it is worth remembering that such large dogs with pronounced protective qualities need socialization and education.

Samoyed dog

The Samoyed dog or Arctic Spitz is a beautiful snow-white dog that once lived among northern nomadic tribes – herding cattle, hunting, pulling sleighs and even watching over the owner’s children. And although the Samoyed dog has not lost its working qualities, today it can be seen more often at exhibitions.

Siberian Husky

A breed of dog bred from indigenous dogs of the Far Eastern region of Russia. Today she has a lot of admirers, but future owners should know that Siberian Huskies are working dogs that value freedom and love work.

Chow chow

These Chinese bear dogs require a special approach. Despite the fact that dogs of this breed are not at all similar to their wild ancestors, their DNA is as close as possible to the DNA of wolves. Chow Chows were bred for many centuries in the monasteries of China, and thanks to isolation they have retained their original appearance.

Czechoslovakian Wolfdog

For a long time, people returned to the issue of breeding a hybrid of a dog and a wolf. And although genetically these two species are close, it was not possible to obtain a full-fledged dog with unique wolf qualities. The Czechoslavakian wolfdog can be called the most successful hybrid, which was recognized by the International Canine Federation.

Shar Pei

One of the controversial Chinese dog breeds is the Shar Pei, which combines a rather funny appearance with a serious character. It's hard to believe, but these small funny dogs with many folds of skin are actually formidable watchmen and security guards.

Airedale

These dogs were bred for hunting, and they performed their duties perfectly. Later, their excellent instincts came in handy for police work, and then they retrained as companion dogs. Airedale Terriers are very active, inquisitive and temperamental, so it is not recommended for couch potatoes to have them - the dog will definitely get bored.

Basenji

An amazing breed, it is also called the “African non-barking dog”, which the tribes of Africa still use to hunt lions to this day! Basenjis do not bark, but they make a variety of sounds - croaking, meowing, howling, and, in addition, these dogs wash their faces like cats.

Brussels griffin

A decorative Belgian breed of dog, with a mischievous and sometimes funny appearance. Once upon a time they were favorites of royalty, but today anyone can own such a cute and funny Brussels Griffon.

Welsh Corgi

These are tiny shepherd dogs that are second only to their larger counterparts in size. While doing shepherd's work, they managed to bite the cattle's limbs, driving them into the herd, and at the same time avoid getting under the hooves. There are two types of Welsh Corgi breeds - Cardigan and Pembroke, the former are larger and more serious, but the latter cause joy by their mere appearance.

Jack Russell Terrier

Initially, dogs were bred for burrow hunting, and it was not difficult for them to drive out any animal, sending it into the hands of the hunter. But agility, activity and cheerfulness allowed the Jack Russell Terrier to become an excellent companion dog.

Yorkshire Terrier

Among decorative crumbs, the Yorkshire Terrier is in first place in popularity. At first glance, it may seem that these cute creatures were bred to please their owners, but no. Yorkies were once kept in coal mines and fought with huge rodents.

Chinese Crested Dog

Maltese (Maltese)

Representatives of this breed are called the most beautiful decorative dogs. Their snow-white luxurious coat, beady eyes and black button earlobe cannot leave anyone indifferent. The Maltese is a very playful, affectionate creature that even beginners can get along with.

Pug

These small dogs with a funny face once guarded temples; of course, they were somewhat larger at that time. The modern pug will also guard its owners, but by climbing onto their laps or sitting at the feet of the TV.

Pekingese

The oldest Chinese breed, around which there are a lot of legends. For example, according to one of them, the Pekingese descended from lions and butterflies, according to another - from a lion and a monkey. In the ancient state, only the emperor and representatives of noble families could own Pekingese. When China came out of isolation, representatives of the breed quickly gained popularity and spread throughout the world.

Peruvian hairless dog

In its homeland in Peru, it is considered a sacred animal and they believe in the magical properties of the dog. The Peruvian Hairless Dog is a gentle animal with a calm temperament, an ideal companion dog.

Poodle

There are several types of the breed, but they are all distinguished by their curly, hypoallergenic coat. Poodles love to learn, which may be why they are often found in circus performance arenas.

Dachshund

A burrowing, short-legged hunter that has gained popularity around the world. Dachshunds are very curious, inquisitive and playful, however, owners should be more careful when walking, as the pet’s hunting instincts can suddenly arise.

Fox terrier

The dog breed, bred for burrow hunting, today successfully plays the role of a family pet. Fox Terriers are extremely active, cheerful and playful, so walks with such a pet will never be boring. The owner will have to provide due attention to his four-legged friend, otherwise he may turn out to be a real disaster for housing.

French Bulldog

These small, stocky dogs with an attentive gaze are highly intelligent. This allows them to easily establish relationships with all family members, but for learning, developed mental abilities can be harmful. The fact is that the French bulldog understands at a glance what is wanted from him, but is not sure that he needs it. The owner needs to properly motivate this cunning guy.

Miniature Schnauzer

The smallest, most active and restless among the schnauzers, which, along with its larger brothers, can perform official work. Considering that the Miniature Schnauzer is a bundle of energy, you won’t be bored with him, but you will need a firm hand to contain your pet’s ardor.

Chihuahua

This tiny dog can be found at a social event, because accompanying his owner is his direct responsibility. Without affection, attention and a friendly attitude, dogs waste away. Therefore, when choosing a Chihuahua as a pet, it is worth considering that the baby cannot be left alone for a long time.

Sheltie

Shelties are Scottish Cattle Dogs that are good at this job. Many consider them to be a type of collie, however, these two breeds developed in parallel. To improve the qualities of these small dogs, Scottish Shepherds were used in breeding work.

Shih Tzu

A Chinese breed of dog with a luxurious appearance, imperial calm and a certain arrogance in his gaze. It is not surprising, since for a long time it was forbidden for mere mortals to keep lion dogs, and they lived exclusively in imperial palaces. The modern Shih Tzu is an exceptionally family dog that loves to be the center of attention.

Scottish Terrier

This little terrier from Scotland was a fairly successful hunter, and today he has retrained as a pet. However, the Scotch Terrier has not lost its instincts and habits, which future owners should know about in advance.

Japanese Chin

The name of the breed translates as “precious dog”, but it is not known for certain where it originated - in Tibet or in Japan. The Japanese Chin is a decorative dog that, despite its modest size, can stand up for itself and its owner.

Cur

A mongrel is a dog no worse than a purebred dog. These dogs are always next to us. Nice and not so nice, evil and incredibly kind, overly intrusive and completely invisible. They are all very different, they are only united by the name - mongrel. A dog that does not have a pedigree, in which many different bloods are mixed, does not cease to be a faithful and devoted friend of a person who sometimes treats it rather contemptuously.

A large number of breeds allows everyone to choose a pet in accordance with their preferences and wishes.
