Here's What Happens When Owners Give Their Pets to a Shelter (4 Photos)
Tammy Graves lives in North Carolina, USA. In her spare time, she visits local animal shelters to take photos to post online. This is how volunteers try to help abandoned animals find a new home. After all, if this does not happen, they will simply be euthanized to make room for more and more vagrants.
This time, one of the dogs was especially filled with Tammy. She not only published his photo, but also wrote a message on the organization’s website:
“This is what happens when owners give their pets to a shelter. Just yesterday morning, this guy woke up on his favorite couch, waiting for a delicious breakfast, happily jumped into the car, expecting to be in the park or, in the worst case, at the veterinarian. But instead, the owner brought him to a place where 275 other dogs were barking in despair, where there was a smell of death, and where the doors were bolted.”
“The animals are taken away and never come back. He doesn't yet know what awaits him. It is not his fault that he was born in the house of irresponsible people. And today he, scared to death, sits in a puddle of his own urine. Too scared to move, to look people in the eye, he cowers in a corner as if trying to blend into the wall. He doesn't want to be seen, he hopes that by becoming invisible he will escape his fate. This is what irresponsible owners and the shelter system lead to. This is not a shelter, this is not a rescue. This is irresponsibility."
Thousands of people forwarded the message to each other, and hundreds of them immediately volunteered to take home the terrified black Labrador named Cash. Now the dog has a new home and loving owners.
Cash is slowly coming to his senses. But behind the walls of the shelter where he was taken, hundreds of animals are still languishing, awaiting death. They all ended up in the shelter because the owners had played enough and decided that they didn’t really want to have a pet. It would be nice if those who want to give their dog to a shelter were forced to spend at least one day in a cell like this. Let them think.
