The Toyota Celica with an Open-Air Rear Deck and Jet Ski Trailer (7 Photos)

In 1999, Toyota introduced the Celica Cruising Deck—a concept car featuring a radically unexpected rear design. Behind the front seats sat an open flatbed that could easily convert into an open-air passenger seating area.

According to the factory spec sheet, the partition separating the front cabin from the rear deck could fold down to reveal an extra seat. While the standard Celica tucked rear passengers safely beneath a fixed roof, this build moved them outside onto a yacht-style deck. The photos clearly showcase both the flat cargo configuration and the deployed passenger seat.

Built for the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota’s October 13, 1999 press release pitched the concept as a way to combine the Celica's sporty character with the versatility of a multipurpose utility vehicle. Naturally, the project remained a wild show car experiment rather than a production package.

To complete the ultimate weekend-getaway aesthetic, Toyota paired the car with a color-matched yellow trailer carrying a jet ski. The photo gallery also reveals a front cabin equipped with a manual gearbox, showing that the radical transformation was strictly confined to everything behind the front seats.
