Aaliyah was a promising 12-year-old rising R&B star when she first met the popular singer. The world was shocked to learn that in 1994, R. Kelly married his 15-year-old protégé in an Illinois hotel room.

Aaliyah Haughton made her TV debut at age nine on the talent competition show

Her meteoric rise came to a sudden and tragic end. On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and members of her record label were returning on a private plane from the Bahamas, where they had just wrapped filming the music video for her single "Rock the Boat." 
The small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, killing Aaliyah and eight others onboard. Most died instantly, though her bodyguard, Scott Gallin, survived briefly. In his final moments, he repeatedly asked about Aaliyah's condition. Autopsy reports revealed the singer suffered severe burns, massive shock, and heart trauma—injuries impossible to survive. 
At her funeral on August 31, 2001, close friends and artists like Missy Elliott and Gladys Knight joined her family in mourning. They released 22 white doves into the sky, symbolizing each year of her life.
"It's like losing a family member. You feel empty, shocked, angry. Words can't describe it. She wasn't just a star or a famous singer—to me, she was like a little sister," Missy Elliott shared through tears. 
The "Rock the Boat" music video was the only shoot her family didn't attend. Aaliyah usually invited her mother, father, and brother to join her on set, but she traveled to the Bahamas without them for that fateful shoot—a twist of fate her family would later view as a tragic sign. 
Along with her family, the entire world mourned a young woman robbed of the long, illustrious career she so richly deserved.
A week after her death, her self-titled third album jumped from No. 19 to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. She also became the first artist to reach a posthumous No. 1 on the UK album chart, while her single "More Than a Woman" topped the UK Singles Chart in January 2002.
