Illegal migrants from Morocco and Algeria have decided to settle in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa. Several thousand people crossed the sea border and bypassed the border fences.
Police are understaffed, and immigration detention centers are overcrowded. Ceuta authorities are demanding that Madrid declare a national state of emergency and deploy the army to guard the border.
According to some estimates, there may be tens of thousands, if not thousands, of migrants. The Spanish government has decided to deploy ground forces to defuse the situation.
Meanwhile, Italy is considering suspending the Schengen Agreement on free movement with Spain due to the migrant crisis in Ceuta.
