A 1000-horsepower Golf with an Audi engine has been created in South Africa (10 photos)
A unique project was timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Volkswagen's South African branch. 
The creation of a hillclimb racing car based on the current, 8th-generation Golf took place at the headquarters of VW Motorsport ZA, the racing division in South Africa, in the Eastern Cape, where Volkswagen Group Africa's massive factory complex is located. However, this project can certainly be called international.
The team, led by Mike Allers, chief engineer and head of the local VW Motorsport division, designed the chassis architecture, integrating a chromoly steel spaceframe into the bodywork. They replaced the standard exterior panels with carbon fiber ones, and integrated them with an aggressive aerodynamic bodywork in the style of TCR race cars, complete with a massive rear wing.
The car's 2.5-liter, 5-cylinder turbo engine from an Audi RS3 was redesigned and boosted by engineers from German tuner Bar-Tek Tuning, increasing its output from 400 to 1,000 hp. The engine control unit was provided by specialists from Australia's MoTeC. Torque is transmitted to all wheels via a sequential transmission from French company Sadev. The car also received a completely redesigned track-specific suspension and brake system from AP Racing.
Last weekend, the 1,000-horsepower Golf debuted in the Top of the Hill Challenge test runs at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria, driven by factory driver Jonathan Mogotsi. The team's main tasks were collecting telemetry data, adjusting the electronics, and calibrating the aerodynamic kit.
