John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil, the company that enriched his family, in 1870. Nearly a century and a half later, Rockefeller's descendants have managed to preserve their wealth. Today, 170 people are considered heirs to this family, whose fortune Forbes estimates at $11 billion.

According to David Rockefeller Jr., this was made possible by the family's adherence to several principles.
1. Family gatherings
Regular Rockefeller gatherings are one of the mandatory rules adhered to by both old and young members of the vast family.
"We hold family gatherings twice a year." "Often, more than 100 family members are in one room, for example, at Christmas dinner," Rockefeller said.
He also explained that the Rockefellers have a tradition of holding so-called forums, which are attended by all family members over 21. At these events, significant issues, including business matters, are discussed.
2. Family History
David Rockefeller speaks of the importance of maintaining family history. He says he can still visit the estate where his great-grandfather lived with his children.
"These are familiar places that have been passed down from generation to generation," admits David Rockefeller.
3. The Absence of a Single Family Monopoly
Rockefeller cited the absence of the concept of a family company as an important factor in his success. In 1911, the US government demanded that the oil monopoly be broken up into smaller firms. This decision not only contributed to the Rockefellers' growing wealth but also prevented the family from falling out over business.
"I think we were fortunate that we didn't have one business that would cause discord within the family," Rockefeller remarked.
4. Philanthropy
According to David Rockefeller Jr., a key factor in the family's success was teaching his children the importance of philanthropy from an early age. He himself made his first donation at the age of 10. The family's various charitable foundations, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the David Rockefeller Fund, manage a total of five billion dollars.
