In the early 20th century, traveling circuses were a rarity and practically the only entertainment option in the small towns of Northern Ireland, and their arrival was a highly intriguing and long-awaited event for locals. Irish photographer H.F. Cooper documented the arrival of four traveling circuses in his hometown of Strabane between 1910 and 1911: Hanneford's Canadian Circus, Scott's Circus, Duffy's Circus, and Buffalo Bill's American Show.

Cooper photographed the performers not in their formal attire and with professional smiles, but during rehearsals, which took place outside in front of an astonished audience.
