The toilet is a room where everyone would like to be alone. But cat and dog owners don't always have this option. Pets simply need to go with their owners to the bathroom and supervise their every move. What's behind this annoying characteristic of cats and dogs?

Animal lovers debate whether curiosity or affection drives pets in such cases. The debate on this topic continues endlessly on social media and zoological forums. But scientists have long since solved this "mystery," and their explanation is simple and logical.

First, it should be noted that not all animals are inclined to go to the toilet with humans. The need to accompany their owner there depends largely on the animal's individual behavior, and to a lesser extent, on its size and breed. It's also important to note that this is a completely normal phenomenon and is not considered an abnormality.

The main reason for joint toilet visits is the animal's need for companionship. Dogs, being pack animals, prefer to do everything together whenever possible. A person perceived not just as one of the pack, but as its leader, will always be a role model for a dog. If you're heading to the toilet or bathroom and doing something there, your dog will be happy to join you. Maybe we need to protect the leader from danger?

Cats are different. They are solitary creatures by nature, but a completely different mechanism comes into play. Cats coexist with people in social groups because they perceive them as... parents. This phenomenon is called imprinting, and it's common not only in cats but also in dogs.

If your pet has grown up with you, it views you as a parent. Therefore, even in adulthood, your cat will accompany you wherever possible. This natural mechanism sometimes also works for animals brought into the home as adults. After some time, an invisible "family" bond develops between the cat and its owner.

Another reason that can't be discounted is simple curiosity. Cats and dogs can't forgive themselves if something happens in the apartment without their involvement. We usually close the toilet and bathroom doors, and this intrigues the animal. Cats are also upset by closed doors, especially if something is happening on the other side.

So, gradually, science is providing us with answers to questions that have puzzled humanity for centuries. Recently, animal psychologists explained why cats are terrified of cucumbers.
