7 things everyone has heard of but no one has seen: J.Lo’s backside, an oil barrel, and more (8 photos)
There are things in the world we've heard about many times and even mentioned in conversations, but we've never actually seen them. These are the kinds of shortcomings in education that can be annoying, but not too critical. We'll try to fill in at least some of these gaps so you can feel a whole head above your conversation partners.
Barrel
The word "barrel," which we're used to hearing about oil, comes from the English word "barrel," which simply means "cask." It turns out that barrels come in many forms, including beer barrels. But the most commonly used is the American oil barrel, which holds 42 gallons, or approximately 158.988 liters of oil. By the way, barrels of pure oil are always painted blue, while those containing petroleum products are painted red.
Uryupinsk
For most of us, the city of Uryupinsk is an abstract name, denoting a remote, godforsaken province. In fact, it's not as bad as many people imagine. Uryupinsk is the administrative center of the Uryupinsk District of the Volgograd Region, located on the banks of the Khoper River. It was founded in the 17th century and currently has a population of 40,000. Among the city's most interesting landmarks is a monument to... a goat.
Rutabaga
Rutabaga is the most frequently mentioned crop in folklore. It's joked about, mentioned disparagingly, as something not particularly healthy. And no one has eaten it, let alone eaten it—most have never even seen it. And that's a shame, because before Tsar Peter the Great brought potatoes, rutabaga was one of the main root vegetables in Rus'. It's a hybrid of cabbage and turnip, native to the Mediterranean. The rutabaga was first described in the 17th century by the Swedish botanist Kaspar Bauhin, leading to its nickname, the "Swedish turnip."
Viktor Pelevin without his glasses
Although you won't find anyone who has seen the writer Viktor Pelevin without sunglasses, there's every reason to believe that the writer sometimes does without them. For example, this unique photo is from somewhere. It's known that even during a lecture in Tokyo, when the event organizers asked him to remove his glasses, Viktor responded by demanding that the audience take off their pants. Pelevin didn't get rid of the accessory, even when he was photographed by iconic photographer Richard Avedon for The New Yorker, so appreciate it.
Jennifer Lopez's Butt
Everyone has heard of American singer, actress, and socialite Jennifer Lopez's prominent butt, and it's long since become a household word. Moreover, most know that this part of her body is insured by its owner for $27 million. Perhaps that's why J.Lo takes such good care of it and, unlike many of her colleagues, mostly shows it off under clothing. However, if you're really interested, you can (not without difficulty) find the star's butt online.
Yandex
We deal with Yandex every day, but we have no idea what it actually looks like. Many people think it's yellow, but they have trouble determining its true shape and size. We can't help you with the dimensions, but we can show you what Yandex looks like, or at least a very small part of it. This is what one of the company's data centers looks like, housing up to 7,000 servers. Each of them processes up to 100 MB of data per second!
Pigeon Nestling
Since a pigeon is a bird, it would be logical to assume that it has chicks. However, very few people have seen them, and they are somewhat reluctant to share their impressions. Now you'll understand why—describing this creature in words is quite difficult, as it's unlike anything else. Some say this beautiful bird has the ugliest chicks in the world.
