You've probably encountered the problem of uninvited "little guests" appearing in your grains or pasta at least once. Pantry moths and other insects are especially fond of bulk foods. Therefore, you should store your supplies carefully. Simply pouring the grains into a jar and putting it in the cupboard isn't always enough.

Read our article to learn what rules you need to follow to ensure your grains, pasta, and flour last as long as possible without attracting any "critters."

Grain Quality

Proper storage of grains begins with their purchase. Pay attention to the quality of the product – the packaging should be intact, the expiration date should be up-to-date, and the grain itself should be clean and neat, without any foreign particles. If the grain is approaching its expiration date or is of poor quality, even the most rigorous adherence to recommendations will not keep it for long. Therefore, it's important to be careful when purchasing supplies.

Proper Storage Location

After purchasing high-quality grain, you need to choose the right storage location. It should be a dry, closed area, free from sudden changes in temperature and humidity. Kitchen cabinets are ideal! However, you can also store grains in a pantry or on a balcony, provided you follow the recommendations above.

The Right Container

It is highly recommended not to store cereals in factory-made containers, as they are not airtight. It is best to purchase special containers for bulk products, ideally glass ones, with tight-fitting lids. Cereals will be completely safe in these jars.

For additional protection against small pests, add some dried lemon or orange zest, a clove of garlic, or a bay leaf to the container. If bugs have already appeared and you need to get rid of them, wash the jar thoroughly and then keep it in the freezer for 24 hours. This will ensure that all the larvae are destroyed.

Regular Inspection

Even if you followed all the rules described above, this does not guarantee that bugs will not appear. Therefore, it is recommended to regularly inspect your cabinets. Make it a rule to dust the inside, air out the cabinets, and inspect the jars of cereal at least once a month.

General Recommendations

Here are a few more rules to follow if you want your grains to last as long as possible:

Don't buy too much grain "in reserve"; most have a shelf life of 6 months to a year;

Another reason not to overstock is that grains lose their flavor over time;

Pasta is best stored in its original packaging, but in a cool, dry place;

Scoop up the grains with a dry spoon;

Don't leave the container open for too long;

Don't add more grain to the container until the old one is finished.
