Pizza for millions: 16 years since the first purchase with Bitcoin (1 photo)

Exactly 16 years ago, the first real purchase in history was made using Bitcoin. In 2010, miner Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas worth about $40, forever cementing his place in cryptocurrency history. The transaction, which at the time seemed like a simple experiment among enthusiasts, now seems almost legendary. At today's exchange rate, that pizza would have cost Hanyecz approximately $770 million. Since then, the date has become unofficially known as Bitcoin Pizza Day and is celebrated annually by the crypto community around the world. And Laszlo's story has become emblematic of how unpredictable Bitcoin's rise in price has been in recent years.
