According to investigators, some monks were told they were carrying "educational materials and sweets" for schoolchildren.
At Sri Lanka International Airport, police detained Buddhist monks who were transporting more than 110 kg of narcotics. The seizure of illegal drugs was the largest in the airport's history. The total value of the seized substances is estimated at 1.1 billion rupees (approximately $11.6 million).
The 22 monks were returning from a four-day vacation in Thailand. According to the newspaper's sources, each was carrying approximately five kilograms of drugs in their suitcases, which were hidden in recesses in the luggage compartments.
According to investigators, three monks organized the trafficking, and accomplices were recruited through social media. The organizers promised the young monks free flights, accommodation, and meals. The monks were allegedly used covertly, being assured that they would be transporting textbooks and sweets for schoolchildren.
According to DM, police from the Narcotics Bureau arrested the alleged organizer of a drug expedition. According to investigators, a similar trip involving 12 monks took place last month. Another drug smuggling operation was planned for the near future.
