The Unexpected Danger of a Popular Meme
When encountering a beaver, it's important not to try to attract its attention or touch the animal, said Polish zoologist and animal psychologist Weronika Narbut.
"The stupidest and most irresponsible thing you can do when encountering a beaver is to try to attract its attention, shout 'Beaver, bitch!' and touch the animal, disturbing its peace," Narbut said, adding that in such a case, the animal may feel threatened and become aggressive.
The beaver became a very popular animal in Poland and abroad after the meme "Beaver, bitch" emerged from a viral video in which a man, surprised by the sight of a beaver, shouted a Polish curse word. The meme spread widely online and spawned numerous videos on the topic, and was also used in the song "Beaver," which also went viral.
A zoologist warns against making any sudden movements or approaching a beaver closer than a few meters. The specialist urges people to always carefully observe the behavior of any beaver they encounter.
"Under no circumstances should you try to feed or pet them. In fact, you shouldn't reach out to them," the agency's source added.
The zoologist emphasized the danger of encounters with beavers for pets. Those walking dogs near potential beaver habitats should keep them on a leash, Narbut warned, as the dog could provoke the beaver.
"But the most important advice when encountering a beaver is to stay away and not interfere," the specialist concluded.
