An Original Bike Path That Lets You Ride the Waters and Communicate with Ducks (14 photos + 1 video)

Imagine getting on a bike, and a minute later the water reaches eye level, while ducks and swans glide past.





This isn't nonsense or fantasy. In the Belgian province of Limburg, which calls itself a cycling paradise, they decided it wasn't enough to simply build kilometers of trails. They also needed to create memorable experiences. That's how the "Bike on Water" route was born.



The 200-meter trail doesn't run over the lake. It literally cuts right into it. The path is almost one and a half meters below the water level, putting the cyclist's eyes level with the surface of the pond. There's only water on either side. In the summer, you can catch a glimpse of a duck swimming by, and in the winter, you can peer right into the reflection of the sky in the frozen surface.





Architects built tunnels under the highway so fish and frogs could migrate freely from one part of the lake to the other. Limburg doesn't want more kilometers, it wants the best ones.



Half a million people drove here in the first two years. And not a single one complained about traffic jams.



The path isn't just operational; it's also broken several records:

1,000,000 cyclists. In November 2025, the millionth visitor since its opening was officially registered. They were a family from the Netherlands, who received flowers and a gift voucher.

Open 24/7 and free of charge. The path remains open to everyone. It is integrated into the local network of bike routes.

Economic impact. One cyclist spends an average of €29 per ride. In 2019, this brought the region approximately €6.5 million. Traffic has only increased since then.

Inspired new projects. The success of the path across the water led to the creation of the "Bike Through the Trees." This is a winding path at a height of 10 meters among the crowns of pine trees, whose zigzags have already been appreciated by more than 360,000 cyclists.
