At Gol Stave Church, one of Norway's oldest examples of wooden architecture, researchers discovered graffiti carved into the walls dating back to the Middle Ages. The church was reportedly built in the early Middle Ages and was repeatedly rebuilt and relocated, while preserving elements of the original structure. The inscriptions and drawings left on the wood presumably date from the 11th to 13th centuries and could have been made by parishioners or builders. This discovery offers new insights into the everyday lives of people of that time and their modes of self-expression, even in sacred spaces.
