Artificial intelligence-powered robots have appeared on the beaches of Hainan Province, China. They collect small debris by sifting sand.
The machines were developed by the Institute of Hainan Studies at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
They move on tracks, sift sand to a depth of 12 cm, and find even small debris like cigarette butts and plastic. The machines are noticeably faster than humans, cleaning up to 3,000 square meters per hour.
In the future, they are planned to be used on thousands of beaches across China.
