A delivery room turned into a courtroom: a woman fought for the right to a natural birth
In Florida, 33-year-old Cheris Doyley, in active labor and lying in a hospital bed, was forced to participate in a court hearing via Zoom after refusing a planned cesarean section in favor of a vaginal birth.
The court hearing, initiated by the hospital, involved a judge, doctors, and lawyers, and was intended to determine whether intervention could be made without her consent. Despite her objections, the court ruled that doctors could perform the surgery in an emergency—which is what later happened when the baby's heartbeat suddenly deteriorated, forcing her to undergo a cesarean section.
