In Nepal, a large-scale fraud scheme on the routes to Everest was uncovered

Nepalese authorities have accused several travel agencies, associated doctors, and helicopter operators of large-scale fraud and causing injury to tourists in order to collect $19.6 million in insurance payments.

Numerous victims of the fraudulent scheme were tourists on trekking routes in the Everest region. Investigators found that tour guides deliberately mixed substances into travelers' food to induce acute illness, including gastrointestinal upset, nausea, and weakness—symptoms of altitude sickness, a potentially fatal condition at high altitudes.

Following a well-practiced plan, the scammers carried out costly emergency helicopter evacuations of tourists to hospitals to "save their lives," where associated doctors falsified diagnoses and prescribed unnecessary treatments to collect substantial payments from insurance companies.

Thirty-two suspects, including travel agency owners and guides, helicopter operators, and doctors, are accused of violating tourist safety laws. According to The Times of India, the fraud involving them has been recognized by Nepalese authorities as one of the largest in the tourism industry, threatening to tarnish the country's reputation. The scandal could have a significant negative impact on the Nepalese tourism industry, the country's primary source of foreign exchange.
