A scheme involving "false rescues" of climbers worth millions of dollars was uncovered on Everest
A massive scandal on Everest has exposed a fraudulent network involving expensive rescue operations, orchestrated by guides, helicopter operators, and medical workers. Between 2022 and 2025, Nepalese police recorded more than 300 fake evacuations, costing insurers nearly $20 million. According to investigators, some guides convinced tourists to feign illness, and in some cases deliberately worsened their conditions, to justify calling a helicopter.
The "rescues" were then billed for flights, medical procedures, and services that were never actually performed. The investigation led to arrests and criminal charges, but raised serious questions about safety and ethics in the high-altitude tourism industry. ![]()
