The first manned mission to the Moon in half a century successfully launched from Cape Canaveral. The first technical problems soon arose.
Four astronauts were on board the Orion spacecraft. They were scheduled to orbit the Moon and return to Earth in 10 days.
First, there was a brief loss of communication with Mission Control. During this time, specialists could not hear the crew, although they continued to receive signals from Earth. Then another problem arose on the spacecraft. The astronauts reported that the new toilet had malfunctioned. However, the crew was able to repair it—all the while, the astronauts were in contact with Earth, receiving valuable instructions on how to adjust the toilet.
Just over an hour before the launch of the new American lunar expedition, NASA specialists discovered problems with the communications system for the end-of-flight mission. After the problems were resolved, the crew finally departed for the Moon.
