The sky over Crete turned red

A sandstorm turned the sky over the island of Crete in Greece blood-red. Videos from locals and tourists instantly went viral on social media.

The "bloody apocalypse" has reached North Africa and Europe, as cities have been blanketed by a wave of dust from the Sahara. This is especially noticeable on the island of Crete in Greece, where the sky has turned bright red.

People are advised to stay indoors. Meteorologists estimate dust concentrations at over 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter, which is considered quite high.

A woman with her son flew from Athens and filmed the view from her window.

Due to poor visibility, Heraklion Airport operations were disrupted. At least two flights were forced to make emergency landings due to visibility declining to 1 km.

Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Balkans, Egypt, and some other countries are at risk.
