23-year-old British athlete Gabriel Gledhill succumbed to temptation during a cross-country skiing marathon at a World Cup stage in Norway. The skier accepted alcoholic drinks from spectators for much of the race.
He began drinking alcohol on the third lap of the 50 km race. During the marathon, the Briton consumed 12 beers and six shots of hard liquor. He finished the race in 69th place, more than 20 minutes behind the winner.
On the final lap, Jessica Diggins (USA) and Frida Karlsson (Sweden), who started their marathon 45 minutes later, overtook the skier.
"I started drinking beer around the third lap. And then suddenly, I hadn't drunk that much, but I started getting a little drunk. I drank everything: beer, hard liquor. Someone even offered me mouthwash. But I threw up almost immediately. A hell of a fun experience.
It's known that the athlete's application for a permanent residence permit extension in Norway was denied. He is now required to leave the Scandinavian country by March 28.
This decision [not to renew his Norwegian residence permit] changes my entire life. I have to leave Norway and the Schengen zone by March 28. It's very hard and unexpected. It's like breaking up with a girlfriend. I had such a good time here, I love Norway. It's very sad," VG quotes Gledhill as saying.
