A flea market envelope contained old photographs by an unknown photographer.

Milagros Caturla

In the 1960s, an unknown photographer took some talented photos in Barcelona, and the photographer's name was searched for all over the internet. The amazing story of Spain's Vivian Maier.

In the summer of 2001, American Tom Sponheim was vacationing with his wife in Barcelona. On their way to the Sagrada Familia, they wandered into a bustling flea market, where Tom noticed a stack of photo negatives on a table. He bought an envelope containing all the shots for $3.50.

Returning home, Sponheim scanned the negatives and realized he was holding the work of an unknown but very talented photographer.

In 2010, he created a Facebook page in hopes of finding the photographer or the people in them. Several people from Barcelona actually recognized themselves or people they knew in the photos. But the photographer's identity remained a mystery.

In 2017, Begoña Fernández, who viewed the popular Facebook page, admired the images and determinedly set out to find the photographer.

After days and nights spent studying details and backgrounds in the photographs, she determined that many of them were taken in the area around the elementary school. She then unearthed a 1962 advertisement for a photography competition that offered locations that matched these shots.

Further research led Fernández to the archives of the Photographic Association of Catalonia. Leafing through the dusty pages of an old magazine, she suddenly recognized a photo from Sponheim's Facebook page. It was an image of a woman praying, which had won fourth place in the 1961 competition. The unknown photographer turned out to be Milagros Caturla.

She was the seventh child in a family of ten children. A teacher by education, she worked as an administrator. Milagros was an enthusiastic photographer and won several local competitions. She died in 2008.

Now Fernandez and Sponheim are working on organizing an exhibition of Caturla's work, whose story was so reminiscent of Vivian Maier.
