China hosts an annual soot smearing festival during Chinese New Year in Yunnan Province.
The festival is especially popular among the Yao and Zhuang peoples. The festival's name, Moheizhe, literally translates as "black smearing festival."
It is believed that the more soot you smear on yourself, the more good fortune and happiness you will attract in the coming year. Both ordinary citizens and law enforcement officials participate—no one escapes.
