The name of the festival, Moheizie, literally translates from Chinese as "black smearing festival." This is an unusual traditional ritual festival held in the Chinese province of Yunnan. It is especially popular among the Yao and Zhuang peoples.
Soot is used for smearing. It is believed that the more black and smeared you are, the more luck and happiness you will attract and protect yourself from evil spirits. Not only passersby get it, but even the police and the dogs.
