Phuket's beaches are awash with fuel oil. A container ship carrying 130 tons of fuel oil recently sank off the coast, and today black clots have reached popular resort areas. Vacationers are finding small, dark clumps in the sand that are difficult to spot unless you look closely. Banana Beach on Coral Island and Patong Beach are considered the most dangerous spots.
