The actor who made famous the line about loving the smell of napalm in the morning was 95.
Oscar-winning actor and film director Robert Duvall has died at the age of 95. His wife, Lucian, announced that he died Sunday at his ranch in Middleburg, Virginia.
Duvall is widely known to moviegoers for his roles in both "The Godfather" films, where he played Tom Hagen, the Corleone family's consigliere and lawyer, and Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in "Apocalypse Now." Despite his minor role, Duvall's character and his line about napalm are the first to be mentioned when talking about this film. Thanks to his talent, he managed to outshine both his leading man, Martin Sheen, and Marlon Brando himself.
Robert Duvall was born on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California. He attended Principia College in Illinois and served in the Army during the Korean War. In 1954, he moved to New York City, where he enrolled at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Acting. Duvall began his acting career at the Gate Theatre, and made his film debut in 1962 with the role of Arthur "Bogeyman" Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Robert Duvall has been nominated for an Oscar seven times. In 1984, he won the Best Actor award for his role in Tender Mercies, where he played the alcoholic country singer Mac Sledge.
During his career, Duvall has played many historical figures, including Confederate General Robert E. Lee (Gods and Generals, 2003), Joseph Stalin in the HBO television film Stalin (1992), and Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in The Man Who Captured Eichmann (1996).
