A Remote-Controlled Car Sets a World Record Land Speed Record (2 photos + 1 video)
British engineer Stephen Wallis has set a new world speed record for radio-controlled cars. His project is the culmination of nearly twenty years of work and exemplifies what a high-speed RC car should look like.
The Beast lacks a traditional transmission and steering system. Instead, Wallis used an approach borrowed from quadcopters, relying on electronic control.
Each wheel is driven by a separate electric motor, and turns are achieved by varying their speed. Stabilization is handled by a flight controller with gyroscopes and accelerometers, capable of making thousands of adjustments per second.
The record-breaking run used an 18S battery system consisting of three 6S packs with a peak voltage of 75.6 V. At the ROSSA competition in Wales, The Beast reached a speed of 377.8 km/h, setting a new world record.
