A cow brushes itself

A cow in Austria has learned to brush herself. This is the first scientifically documented example of conscious tool use by cattle.

The cow learned to brush herself—and surprised even scientists. She became the first recorded case of conscious tool use by cattle.

The cow's owner noticed that she was deliberately seeking out brushing sticks about 10 years ago. Moreover, depending on the part of her body, the animal alternates sides: she scratches her udder with the sharp end and her back with the broad end.

Biologists believe this behavior may indicate that cows are actually more intelligent than previously thought.
