The pink sky that startled residents of Birmingham and the West Midlands appeared on the evening of January 8, 2026. Some thought it was the Northern Lights, others thought it was a chemical release into the atmosphere. However, the true cause turned out to be quite different: the LED lights at St. Andrews Stadium created the unusual optical effect.

British Met Office spokesman Graham Madge later explained that snow and water droplets in the air scatter blue-wavelength light, allowing longer, orange, and red rays to dominate. As a result, the sky took on a soft pink or orange hue.
