Last year gave us four billion-grossing films, double the number expected in 2024. A cartoon once again topped the list (and, frankly, it was also in second place). Seven of the 10 films on the list placed a strong emphasis on animated settings or characters. This is probably one of the fundamental hallmarks of modern blockbusters, which are destined to gross big.
10th Place – Superman
Box Office: $616 million
People still wanted to see how the next new Superman was doing, for old times' sake. Things are looking up.
9th place — F1
Box office: $631 million
Brad Pitt starred not in a crime comedy, but in a cool racing blockbuster. This is definitely a must-see on the big screen: both for the incredible high-speed racing footage and for the ever-present Pitt.
8th place — How to Train Your Dragon
Box Office: $636 million
Exactly the same story we saw back in 2010, only better told. As it turns out, something like this can be made without losing the charm of the original.
7th place — Demon Slayer: Infinite Fortress (Japan)
Box office: $724 million
Meet the highest-grossing anime of all time and the highest-grossing film ever made in Japan. This is the third part of a trilogy; we don't know anything else, we confess. It would seem that Japanese cinema has leaped above its weight, but you haven't seen Chinese successes yet.
6th Place — Jurassic World: Resurgence
Box Office: $869 million
The franchise continues to thrive. However, this time, we assure you, the film is truly worth watching. It's a decent local story, with several top actors crammed into it.
5th place — Minecraft in the cinema
Box office: $958 million
We don't suggest you watch this beauty, but predictably, it made a lot of money.
Further down, only billionaires.
4th place — Lilo & Stitch
Box office: $1.038 billion
You've probably forgotten that this cartoon adaptation was released in 2025. And she really made it.
3rd place – Avatar: Fire and Ash
Box office: $1.098 billion (so far)
Yes, "Avatar" is only the third film, but it came out on DECEMBER 19th. And in two weeks, it has surpassed almost all hits. It's clear that by the end of January, it will break the $2 billion mark. That means it will also be among the top-grossing films of 2026, no matter what happens next. "Avatar" is so big that it spans two years at once.
2nd place – Zootopia 2
Box office: $1.594 billion
Last year – Inside Out 2, this year – the second Zootopia. We're expecting more cartoon sequels; they're obviously popular.
1st place – Ne Zha defeats the Dragon King (China)
Box Office: $2.259 billion
So, what kind of Pokémon is this? It's not just the highest-grossing release of 2025, it's also the highest-grossing animated film of all time and the highest-grossing project made outside of Hollywood. Incidentally, this is also a sequel – the first part, "Ne Zha," was released in 2019 and grossed just over $700 million. We don't know anything else, we confess, but there's not much to add.
