Hyundai will recall tens of thousands of Tucson crossovers: they can catch fire (1 photo)
Hyundai has identified 51,587 Tuscon crossovers in the United States as being at risk of fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) clarifies that the cause of the potential fire is the towbar, which Hyundai offers in North America as a factory accessory.
The towbar installers incorrectly routed the included wiring harness, leaving the control module exposed to water. If moisture penetrates, it will cause the brake lights to malfunction, operating intermittently or shutting off completely. This increases the risk of accidents.
Water entering the module could even cause a short circuit, resulting in a fire. Hyundai confirmed that it has three fires related to this issue and 287 reports of incorrectly functioning headlights. Owners can identify moisture ingress by the brake lights malfunctioning.
Vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and August 2024 will need to be repaired.
In October, Hyundai announced a recall of Santa Fe crossovers, which are also at risk of catching fire. More than 135,000 vehicles may have been equipped with incorrectly assembled starters.
