Why is Christmas celebrated in January on Scotland's most isolated island? (6 photos)

While most of Britain will be putting down its Christmas tree in January, the United Kingdom's most isolated island will only just begin to get into the festive spirit. Foula, a tiny Scottish island 20 miles west of the Shetland Islands, celebrates Christmas on January 6th – a tradition that sets it apart from the rest of the country.

The holiday's date is determined by the Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC. It remained the standard dialect in the Western world for over 1,600 years, until Gregorian, adopted by most of Great Britain, supplanted it in 1752.

After a leap year in 1900, Christmas and New Year in Foula shifted 12 days later than in other parts of Great Britain.

With a population of just 35, Foula is considered one of the most remote places in Great Britain. There are no pubs, shops, Wi-Fi, or connection to the national grid, and food is delivered only by boat or small plane when the weather permits.

However, the secluded location has its advantages. Foula, covering five square miles, offers a diverse range of natural beauty.

The island is dominated by five impressive peaks, including Da Came, one of Britain's highest sea cliffs.

This location is also renowned as one of the best in the UK for viewing the Northern Lights, known locally as the "Mirri Dancers." They can be seen from mid-October to mid-March, depending on weather conditions.

The island is known for its sheep and unique wildlife. Its waters attract scuba divers searching for shipwrecks, including the RMS Oceanic, built in 1899 and sunk during World War II.

For those who prefer to stay on land, the ranger service offers guided walks. You can also explore the island independently using maps provided by Foula Heritage.

Fula is a two-hour ferry ride, which departs three times a week, or by plane from the Shetland Islands mainland.

It's worth noting that there are no full-board hotels on the island. You must bring your own supplies, including food.
