In China, a driver drove for 4 hours at 115 km/h due to a broken cruise control.
The car had traveled 490 kilometers. The driver claims he tried applying the brakes, shifting into neutral, using the handbrake, and disabling the cruise control, all to no avail. He refused to disclose the make and model of the car. The manufacturer promised to refund him the money for the car and provide compensation.
Updated: According to media reports, the driver acted quite sensibly – he turned on the hazard lights, periodically honked at other vehicles, and overtook when necessary. He also called the police and the technical support service of the dealership where he purchased the car.
Approximately 20 minutes later, the speeding car was caught by Lintao County police, who cleared the road ahead and blocked the entrances to the highway. More than a dozen cars with flashing lights formed an escort convoy, monitoring the traffic lanes and ensuring safe passage.
As the fuel gradually ran out, the car's speed dropped from 115 to 30 km/h, and it finally stopped, having traveled 490 km in just a few hours.
After regaining consciousness, the driver thanked the police and road authorities for their assistance. The car, which, judging by photos and video from the scene, turned out to be a brand-new FAW Bestune B70, was later returned to the dealership.
The manufacturer compensated the cost of the car and provided a replacement vehicle. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
