Dragonfly invasion in Uruguay

Uruguay is overrun by dragonflies. A local resident captured a large number of insects on the street.

Swarms of dragonflies have descended on Montevideo and other cities in Uruguay. Alarmed locals are posting videos of the swarms of insects on social media, according to the newspaper El Observador.

In an interview with Telemundo, biology graduate Manuel Castro stated that dragonflies are not to be feared, as they are beneficial to humans by feeding on the larvae of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries dengue fever.

He said the dragonflies spotted belong to the Aeshna family, known for their migrations of several dozen kilometers.

"They don't bite and don't carry diseases," Castro said.
