In Afghanistan, Peaky Blinders cosplay ended in arrest. Four young Afghans were detained and taken to police stations after strolling down the street in stylish black suits, coats, and caps. The incident occurred in the village of Jebrail in Herat Province, located in the west of the country.
In an interview with the YouTube channel "Herat Mic," Afghans explained that they admire the series and the clothing style of its characters. However, they are not fixated on Western cinema and would also like to promote traditional local dress.
"People took selfies with them, children admired them, and for a short time, the historic city of Herat became a place where young people can express themselves without fear," Bilal Sarwary wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Despite the positive reaction of most Afghans to the fashion show, a representative of the Ministry of the Promotion of Virtue, Saiful Islam Khyber, was extremely negative about the idea. He criticized his compatriots for imitating Western fashion and called the promotion of a culture alien to Afghanistan unacceptable.
"We saved this country from the spread of a corrupt culture at great cost, and now we will defend it," he said.
As a result, the men were forced to publicly repent. Whether any further sanctions were imposed on them is unknown, but the Taliban had previously detained citizens for violations of the dress code and behavior. Reasons for arrest could include a "Western haircut" or improper clothing. The local morality police have special requirements for women: in fact, women are prohibited from practically everything, from using cosmetics to talking on the street.
Recently, the Taliban have been actively monitoring social media, and any form of self-expression by fellow citizens can become grounds for persecution.
