At 35, I'm a Virgin—Trolls Call Me Expired and a Narcissist (4 photos + 1 video)
Lauren Harkins, 35, has never dated or had an intimate relationship. Although she's often criticized, and even called "an overdue woman," the American is happy with her choice. "I've never felt ashamed of being a virgin or having limited sexual experience, and I've always been open about it," she shares.
"For me, it's like giving up alcohol, smoking, and psychoactive substances. It's another way to respect my body, energy, and personal boundaries."
"Intimacy isn't just a way to 'keep up' with others. I believe there's real power in consciously choosing who we allow into our lives and our world."
A Maine, USA, resident hopes to one day enter into a long-term relationship, but has decided not to have children, so she's in no rush.
"I'd rather wait for a relationship—and a man—who I feel is truly meant for me."
She's often told she doesn't look like a virgin. Lauren attributes this to not fitting the conventional stereotype of a shy, socially awkward, and timid woman.
"Criticism usually falls into predictable categories—accusations that I'm lying, 'stale,' attention-seeking, narcissistic, and so on. Once you understand the psychology behind online hostility, all this negativity doesn't bother you; it's even amusing."
"We still live with outdated views on virginity. It's thought to automatically indicate modesty or even social backwardness. I strive to shatter these stereotypes."
People often think Lauren is religious and saving herself for marriage. But that's not true.
She calls herself spiritual, but not religious, and doesn't support the idea of marriage.
"I value a sincere, harmonious, and long-term partnership," she said, "not a formal contract or tradition for tradition's sake."
"I'm not a hyper-traditional woman, but I'm not a modern, 'anything goes' kind of woman either. Balance is my main focus, and I find harmony in opposites," she concluded.
"I'm waiting for my person, not jumping on the first one that comes along. You won't catch me changing my views out of fear or despair.
I'm not here to follow the crowd or seek approval from people with different values. I'm on my own wavelength, and I like it that way."
