New Zealand police waited 6 days for a thief to return a Fabergé egg in the most honest way (4 photos)
In Auckland, New Zealand, a theft worthy of a comedy thriller occurred in late November.
A 32-year-old man came up with a grand plan, as foolproof as Chinese underwear. He confidently walked into the prestigious Partridge Jewelers jewelry store, asked the salesperson to show him a Fabergé egg pendant from the display case, and, unable to come up with anything better, swallowed it right in front of astonished onlookers. Naturally, the salespeople pressed the panic button, and the police arrived a few minutes later to find the suspect with a rather thoughtful expression on his face.
The pendant turned out to be no ordinary one. It's a limited edition Fabergé × 007. The golden egg is covered in green enamel, adorned with dozens of diamonds and sapphires, and inside hides a tiny golden octopus (a reference to the 007 film "Octopussy"). The asking price was 33,000 New Zealand dollars. The man stubbornly denied any wrongdoing, claiming he hadn't swallowed anything and had simply stopped by to admire the beauty.
Police conducted a medical examination, confirmed that the jewel was indeed in the stomach, and decided to wait. For six days straight, the suspect lived under 24-hour surveillance: he ate, slept, and finally fulfilled his main mission – becoming a "chicken." On December 4th, the egg passed naturally, along with the chain and price tag.
Law enforcement officers carefully removed the find, photographed it while wearing medical gloves, and returned it to its owners. Fortunately, the pendant was undamaged and has already been returned to its display case. The hero of the story remained in his cell—he will now have to explain to the court why he decided to become a human safe.
