In London, activists threw apple pie at the British Empire Crown
Four people threw an apple pie at a display case housing the British Crown Jewels. They then poured custard on the glass.
The activists were demanding the creation of a "House of the People" and "taxing" the excessively wealthy, The Guardian reports.
First, one of the activists threw a pie at the glass, then the display case was doused with bright yellow custard, after which the crowd chanted several slogans over the loudspeaker: "Democracy has failed. Britain is broken. We have come here to this nation's jewels to take back power."
Take Back Power, a non-violent civil resistance group, claimed responsibility for the action.
A Tower employee quickly approached the activists and called for backup over the radio. Metropolitan Police, who arrived on the scene, detained and subsequently took the young men into custody and launched an investigation.
The group demanded that the British government create a "House of the People"—an assembly of residents—and grant it the power to "tax" the excessively wealthy and improve the country's property situation.
The jewelry itself was not damaged during the protest.
