A huge cloud of dust and sand descended on the mine for two days in a row, turning day into night and reducing visibility to a few meters.
"On Sunday, for the second day in a row, a sandstorm swept over one of Australia's largest underground gold mines in the remote Tanami Desert."
Miner Lachlan Markant, caught in the storm with his colleagues, described it this way: "It reminded us of Uluru (a 348-meter-tall rock in Australia's Northern Territory); the size and width alone are impressive. It just came barreling toward us."
None of the miners were injured.
The arid desert climate is conducive to sandstorms, and in some regions, such storms occur monthly.
