Musicians from the Japanese group Open Reel Ensemble stretched magnetic tape from reel-to-reel tape recorders onto a triangular frame and played it with drumsticks.
The Japanese musical trio Open Reel Ensemble creates unique experimental music using a combination of analog and digital devices. Their primary "instrument" is reel-to-reel tape recorders from the 1970s and 1980s, which are interesting in their own right.
To produce "mesmerizing, ethereal" melodies, the musicians attach bows to analog tape wound on a reel-to-reel basis. They pluck the tape like a guitar string, strike the taut tape with drumsticks, and spin the reels like a DJ with vinyl turntables. The band uses multitrack tape recorders for recording; the resulting sounds can then be separated or layered during performance.
The band members refer to their hybrid devices and techniques as "magnetic folk instruments," and the musical genre they created as "magnetic punk" (Magnetikpunk). Open Reel Ensemble is popular and frequently performs at international festivals.
