Metias Kranets wanted to teach an animal to play the piano and chose an octopus because of its enormous potential. This animal has the intelligence of a three-year-old child, is an incredible problem-solver, and each of its tentacles has its own separate brain.
First, the experimenter gained the octopus's trust by giving it food. Within a week, the first key appeared in the aquarium. Using rewards, the octopus learned to play three notes. It refused to play any more.
After consulting with an engineer, Metias attached a new structure. A tube with a crab inside was placed in the center of the piano, and for each note played, the crab descended a short distance. Using this method, the trainer was able to surpass the three-note limit. The octopus was able to play the piano after six months of training.
